Learning Disability
- Under 65
People with
learning difficulties may have lived in their own homes,
cared for by family or riends. Others may have lived
in special needs homes. As people grow older they may
have different care needs and be looking for a change
of home or somewhere which caters for changes in their
circumstances.
There are
a wide range of specialist care homes for people with
learning disabilities. These tend to have a high emphasis
on activities, as the typical resident will have a learning
disability but be physically fine, and on promoting
independence.
As residents
grow older, physical needs might start to outstrip the
problems associated with learning difficulties. It is
important to continually assess an individuals
specific needs in these circumstances to ensure that
the individuals physical needs are being appropriately
cared for as well as his or her learning disability
needs.
People with
learning difficulties are living longer with better
treatment, and more care homes are now offering specialist
care.
