CATEGORIES OF HOME

There are 4 categories of home:

CARE HOME for those aged typically under 65
CARE HOME for those aged typically over 65
CARE HOME WITH NURSING for those aged typically under 65
CARE HOME WITH NURSING for those aged typically over 65.

(the age cut-off of 65 is not set in stone – many homes are for those over 60, for example - but 65 does tend to be the typical cut-off age)

It is easiest to define a CARE HOME by comparing it to a CARE HOME WITH NURSING.

Both CARE HOMES and CARE HOMES WITH NURSING are residential homes where elderly people can live and be looked after in their later years.

Generally speaking, a CARE HOME caters for people ranging from those who are physically and mentally fine but who find it hard to carry out everyday tasks such as shopping, cooking and cleaning, to those who are quite physically frail or mentally infirm to the extent that they are incapable of looking after themselves but who do not have any significant medical requirements.

A CARE HOME WITH NURSING, on the other hand, also caters for people who are elderly and physically or mentally infirm, with the difference being that these people also need ongoing medical attention. A CARE HOME WITH NURSING will have 24 hour nursing availability and is geared up to provide nursing and medical care to its residents.

A CARE HOME does not have this 24 hour nursing care available. NHS nurses will visit residents of a CARE HOME as and when required. Different care homes cater for different levels and types of frailty.

A CARE HOME WITH NURSING will therefore also be typically more expensive than a CARE HOME – as a broad rule of thumb, a CARE HOME WITH NURSING might be £200 per week more.

Some homes can offer the facilities of both a CARE HOME and a CARE HOME WITH NURSING under the same roof. These are called DUAL REGISTERED HOMES. Typically these homes will have two wings, one being the CARE HOME and the other being the CARE HOME WITH NURSING. Residents can start in the CARE HOME wing and then in due course move to the CARE HOME WITH NURSING wing if necessary.
