Care homes have to register the categories of care they provide. They can offer more than one category but have to show that they are providing enough appropriately qualified and experienced staff for each category.
Some homes specialise in care within a single category, others may provide care for a range of categories.
For each category the home will be registered for a maximum number of places - up to the maximum number of places the home is registered to provide overall.
For example: A home with 20 registered places may provide 20 places in the "Older Person" category (men and women over 65 with general problems of old age) - and also provide 10 places in the "Physical Disability, Over 65" category. This doesn't mean that they can take 30 residents - they can take up to 20 residents, 10 of whom can have physical disabilities.
